Preparing to Move Into a Home With SIL Support
A practical guide to preparing for a move into a home with Supported Independent Living, including routines, support needs, housemates, safety and service arrangements.
The quick answer
Moving into a home where Supported Independent Living (SIL) is provided involves more than choosing a property. SIL is funding for support workers, not the rent or housing itself, so it helps to plan the support arrangement, daily routines and living environment separately.
Start with the support, not just the property
Write down the help you need across a typical day and night. Current NDIS guidance describes SIL as funding for support workers to help or supervise people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It may suit people who need substantial daily support and some level of assistance or supervision across the remaining hours.
Map your daily routines
List personal care, meals, medication, household tasks, communication, appointments, community access, sleep and overnight support. Include what you can do independently and where you need prompting, supervision or hands-on assistance.
Think about the living arrangement
SIL can involve shared support or individual support depending on disability support needs. If you are considering a shared home, discuss privacy, routines, visitors, shared spaces, noise, compatibility and how support workers will assist different people in the home.
Separate SIL from ordinary living costs
SIL funding does not pay rent, groceries, utilities or other ordinary day-to-day living expenses. Ask what household costs you will be responsible for and what is covered under the support arrangement.
Plan the transition
Agree on a move date, handover information, medication and health routines, equipment, transport, communication preferences, emergency contacts and who should be involved in the first days and weeks.
Review after the move
A move can reveal support needs that were not obvious on paper. Review how the roster, routines, worker mix and living arrangement are working and raise changes early.

Frequently asked questions
Does SIL pay for the house or rent?
No. SIL is funding for support workers to help with daily tasks and supervision. Rent and ordinary living costs are separate.
Do I have to live with other NDIS participants?
Not necessarily. SIL arrangements vary. Current NDIS guidance says support may be shared or individual depending on disability support needs and the living situation.
What should I prepare before moving?
Prepare your daily support needs, routines, communication preferences, medication and health information, safety considerations, household expectations and transition contacts.
If the move involves temporary accommodation or a provider change
Some SIL transitions involve an interim stay, a different provider or a move between homes. These guides help keep support continuity visible during the transition.
