Choosing an NDIS Home and Living Support Option

NDIS home-and-living support is not one single program. Depending on a participant’s needs and goals, the plan may include targeted daily living support, Individualised Living Options, Supported Independent Living, Medium Term Accommodation, Specialist Disability Accommodation or a combination of supports.

Targeted daily living support

Some participants mainly need specific support-worker assistance at certain times rather than a structured home-and-living package. This can include personal care, household tasks and help with routines.

Individualised Living Options

ILO is designed around where and how the participant wants to live and can include host or housemate arrangements, supplementary support and ongoing monitoring.

Supported Independent Living

SIL funds support workers to provide daily assistance and supervision in the participant’s home. The support arrangement is separate from ordinary rent and housing costs.

MTA and SDA serve different purposes

MTA is temporary accommodation in specific transition circumstances. SDA is specialised housing for eligible participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. Neither should be confused with the day-to-day support funding itself.

Use goals and support needs to narrow the options

Consider how much support is needed at home, whether support is shared or individual, the preferred living arrangement, accessibility requirements, informal supports, transition needs and what is already funded in the participant’s plan.

Official NDIS information used for this guide

NDIS rules and terminology can change. These official pages are useful for checking the latest position.

Important: This AIC Services guide is general information, not an NDIS funding decision, clinical advice, housing advice, financial advice or legal advice. Participants should check their current plan and official NDIS information for their circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Can a participant have more than one home-and-living support?

Yes. The NDIS says some participants may have more than one home-and-living support in their plan where the supports address different needs.

Does the NDIS generally pay rent or household bills?

No. The NDIS generally does not pay ordinary rent, mortgage repayments, food, power or other everyday living costs.

Who decides which home-and-living supports are funded?

The NDIA makes funding decisions based on the participant’s circumstances, goals, support needs and the NDIS funding criteria.
