MTA vs SIL: What Is the Difference?
MTA and SIL can appear in the same transition plan, but they fund different things. MTA is temporary accommodation funding; SIL is support-worker funding for daily tasks and supervision in a person’s home.
MTA is temporary accommodation
MTA can fund somewhere to live temporarily for up to 3 months, or 90 days, in specific transition circumstances. It is generally used while a longer-term home or home-and-living arrangement is being prepared.
SIL is support, not the house
Supported Independent Living funds support workers who help with daily tasks and supervision. SIL does not pay ordinary rent or the physical house itself. A person may receive SIL support in different living arrangements depending on their needs and approved plan.
They can overlap during a transition
A participant leaving hospital may be eligible for MTA if they are eligible for SIL or certain other home-and-living supports. In that situation, MTA may bridge the accommodation gap while disability supports are arranged separately.
Different questions to ask
For MTA, focus on the temporary property, timeframe and pathway to the long-term home. For SIL, focus on daily support needs, staffing, routines, shared versus individual support, safety and how support will be delivered over time.
Plan the handover between them
If a participant moves from MTA into a home where SIL will be delivered, make sure worker schedules, medication processes, equipment, transport, household routines and key contacts are ready before the move date.

Does MTA include SIL support?
No. MTA pays for temporary accommodation. SIL is support-worker funding and is arranged separately if it is included in the participant’s plan.
Can MTA be used while waiting for a SIL arrangement?
In some transition circumstances, MTA may be considered while longer-term home-and-living supports are being arranged. The NDIA decides eligibility.
Does SIL pay the rent?
