ILO vs SIL: What Is the Difference?
ILO and SIL are both NDIS home-and-living supports, but they are structured differently. ILO is built around an individual living arrangement such as a host or housemate model, while SIL is support-worker funding for daily assistance and supervision in a person’s home.
ILO is designed around the living arrangement
Individualised Living Options can help a participant decide where they live, who they live with and how support is arranged. ILO may involve a host or housemate arrangement and can combine formal, informal and community supports around the participant.
SIL is support-worker funding in the home
Supported Independent Living focuses on the support workers a participant needs for daily tasks and supervision at home. SIL does not pay ordinary rent or buy the home itself.
ILO uses primary, supplementary and monitoring supports
An approved ILO arrangement is built around primary supports, supplementary supports and monitoring and adjustment. This gives the arrangement a defined structure while still allowing it to be tailored to the participant.
The planning process is different
ILO normally starts with an exploration and design stage and a service proposal before the arrangement is implemented. SIL planning focuses more directly on the level, timing and sharing of support-worker assistance needed in the home.
Choose based on the person, not the label
The right approach depends on the participant’s goals, support needs, preferred living situation, relationships, safety and current NDIS plan. Some participants may also use other home-and-living supports alongside these options.
