SIL transition

Moving Between SIL Homes

Changing homes or SIL providers can affect routines, relationships and support continuity. The move should be participant-led and organised around the person’s needs rather than treated as a simple change of address.

Separate the home from the support

SIL is support-worker funding rather than the housing itself. A move may involve a new property, a new SIL provider, different housemates, or several of those changes at once. Clarify exactly what is changing.

Protect continuity of support

Identify medication, personal care, communication, transfers, meals, appointments, transport, behaviour-support arrangements where relevant and other routines that must continue during the move.

Plan introductions before the move

Where possible, introduce the participant to the new home, workers and housemates in advance. Visits, photos, simple schedules and gradual familiarisation can make the transition easier for some participants.

Coordinate notice and service agreements

Check current service-agreement notice requirements and any tenancy or occupancy obligations. Changing provider should be planned carefully so there is no unintended gap in essential support.

Review the first weeks

A follow-up after the move helps identify staffing, compatibility, routine, transport or household issues early. The participant’s feedback should guide any changes.

Official NDIS information used for this guide

NDIS rules and terminology can change. These official pages are useful for checking the latest position.

Important: This AIC Services guide is general information, not an NDIS funding decision, clinical advice, emergency advice, housing advice or legal advice. Participants should check their current plan and official NDIS information for their circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Is changing SIL provider the same as moving house?

Not always. SIL is support-worker funding, so a participant may change provider without changing home, or move home while keeping some support arrangements. Clarify what is changing in the individual situation.

Should the participant meet new workers before moving?

Where practical and consistent with the participant’s preferences, introductions before the move can help establish familiarity and clarify expectations.

What should be reviewed after the move?

Review support-worker arrangements, routines, communication, housemate compatibility, transport, medication processes, safety and whether the participant feels their goals and choices are being respected.
