Questions to Ask Before Choosing SIL Support
Questions to ask when comparing Supported Independent Living support, including registration, staffing, shared support, service agreements, routines and communication.
The quick answer
Choosing SIL support is about how the support will work every day, not just the address. Use practical questions to compare providers, staffing arrangements, routines, communication and how your support needs will be met.
Is the provider registered for SIL?
Current NDIS guidance requires providers delivering SIL to be registered. Ask the provider about its registration and how it delivers SIL under current NDIS requirements.
What support is available across the day and night?
Ask how planned support, overnight assistance, supervision, active support and unexpected needs are handled. The answer should reflect your disability support needs rather than a generic roster.
Will support be shared or one-to-one?
Ask which hours are shared with other participants and which are individual. Current NDIS guidance says SIL may involve shared or individual support, with one-to-one funding used in limited situations depending on need.
How are workers selected and introduced?
Ask about worker matching, training, consistency, replacements, communication and what happens if a regular worker is unavailable.
How are routines and preferences documented?
Discuss meals, personal care, medication, communication, sleep, appointments, visitors, cultural preferences, household routines and how changes are recorded.
What will the service agreement say?
The service agreement should make the support arrangement clear, including responsibilities, prices or claiming arrangements, cancellation or notice terms, communication and how changes are handled.

Frequently asked questions
Do SIL providers need to be registered?
Yes. Current NDIS guidance requires providers delivering SIL to be registered.
Can I ask how much support is shared?
Yes. It is reasonable to ask which support is shared and which is individual, because this affects how the daily arrangement works.
Should I get the arrangement in writing?
Yes. A clear service agreement helps document what support will be provided and how the arrangement will work.
