NDIS Community Participation Support in Tasmania

Support to take part in community life, activities and social opportunities in ways that reflect the participant’s interests and goals.

What is community participation support?

Community participation support helps participants access activities, places and social opportunities outside the home. The focus is on supporting the person to make choices, take part safely and build routines around the parts of community life that matter to them.

The right activity is different for every participant. Support can be discussed around personal interests, confidence, communication, mobility, social preferences and practical assistance required while out in the community.

Community participation can include

Support is discussed around the participant’s individual needs, preferences, goals and agreed service arrangements.

Social and recreational activities

Support may be planned around community groups, hobbies, sport, events, libraries, local activities or other interests chosen by the participant.

Appointments and everyday community access

Participants may need assistance to prepare for, travel to or take part in appointments and everyday community activities.

Building routines and confidence

Staff can support participation at a pace that suits the participant, without promising particular social, employment or independence outcomes.

Choice comes first

Community participation should be based on the participant’s own goals and preferences rather than a fixed program. AICS can discuss what the participant wants to do, what support is needed, preferred times and places, and any safety or accessibility considerations.

Some community activities also require transport support. Where transport is part of the agreed service, it can be coordinated with the community activity so the support journey is clear from start to finish.

Availability depends on location, timing, staffing and the nature of the requested support. Contact AICS to discuss whether the requested activity and schedule can be supported.
