Choosing Community Activities With NDIS Support
Ideas for choosing community activities that match an NDIS participant’s interests, goals, support needs, accessibility requirements and preferred level of independence.
The quick answer
Community participation works best when the activity has meaning for the participant. The right choice depends on the person’s interests, goals, access needs, confidence, preferred social setting and the support available.
Choose activities that matter to the participant
An activity does not need to look impressive to be valuable. It might be a hobby group, sport, library visit, market, café, volunteering, exercise, cultural activity, event or another place the participant genuinely wants to attend.
The participant’s preferences should guide the choice rather than a provider selecting activities for convenience.
Think about the goal behind the activity
One participant may want social connection, another may want to practise communication, build confidence using public spaces, improve fitness or become more independent with everyday community tasks.
Understanding the goal helps decide what type of support is appropriate.
Check accessibility and support needs
Consider physical access, sensory needs, communication, transport, personal care, meal support, medication routines, fatigue and any other practical issues that could affect participation.
A support worker can help plan and provide agreed assistance so the participant can take part as comfortably and independently as possible.
Review what worked
After an activity, it can be useful to ask what the participant enjoyed, what was difficult and whether they want to do it again. This can improve future planning and help supports stay aligned with the participant’s goals.
Community participation should evolve with the person rather than becoming a fixed routine that no longer suits them.

Frequently asked questions
Does community participation have to be a group activity?
No. Community participation can involve individual or group activities depending on the participant’s interests, goals and support needs.
Can a support worker help me try a new activity?
A support worker may provide agreed assistance to help a participant access and take part in a new activity, including practical planning, transport and support at the destination.
Should the provider choose the activities?
The participant’s choices and goals should guide activity planning. Providers can help identify practical options but should not replace the participant’s decision-making.
