What this guide covers
Transport under the NDIS can mean different things. This guide separates recurring transport funding from the support-worker time and provider transport that may be involved in community participation.
This page is general information. Your own NDIS plan, support needs and current NDIS rules determine what applies to you.
Recurring transport funding
Current NDIS guidance describes recurring transport as the only category in the recurring supports budget. It may be included for eligible participants who cannot travel or use public transport independently.
Recurring transport can help with private travel such as taxis or rideshare services for work, study, day programs and community, social, recreational or leisure activities. The amount and way it is paid depend on the participant’s current plan.
Support-worker transport is a different question
A support worker may also assist a participant to get to and from an activity as part of delivering an agreed support. Worker time, provider travel and vehicle or kilometre charges are not automatically the same as recurring transport funding.
Before agreeing to transport, ask which support is being delivered, what rate applies, whether kilometres or travel are charged separately and which budget or support category the provider expects to claim from.
Check the whole journey, not just the vehicle
For some participants, the main support need is not simply getting from A to B. They may need help preparing to leave home, transferring safely, communicating, navigating the destination, attending the activity and returning home.
Planning the full support task makes it easier to distinguish transport costs from the disability support being delivered during the outing.
Confirm the arrangement before the first trip
Check pickup and drop-off points, accessibility, vehicle requirements, mobility equipment, worker responsibilities, expected kilometres, cancellations, waiting time and what happens if the activity runs late.
NDIS transport rules and pricing arrangements can change. Use your current plan, service agreement and official NDIS information rather than relying on an old funding example.

Frequently asked questions
Is NDIS transport funding the same as a support worker driving me?
Not necessarily. Recurring transport funding is a specific NDIS support, while a support worker may also provide assistance related to community participation or other funded supports. The funding and charging arrangements can be different.
Can transport funding be used for taxis or rideshare?
Current NDIS guidance says recurring transport supports can be used for private travel such as taxis and rideshare services when the participant is eligible and the travel is within the purpose of that funding.
Should I agree to kilometre charges before travel starts?
Yes. Ask the provider to explain any worker travel, participant transport, vehicle or kilometre charges and record the agreed arrangement before regular trips begin.
