What this guide covers

Support coordination is a distinct NDIS support that can help participants understand and use their plan, connect with services and build confidence managing supports. AIC Services provides this page for general information and does not provide Support Coordination.

This page is general information. Your own NDIS plan, support needs and current NDIS rules determine what applies to you.

What a support coordinator does

Current NDIS guidance says a support coordinator can help you understand and use the supports in your plan, connect with providers and community or mainstream services, and build your confidence and skills to manage your supports.

The role is not the same as delivering your day-to-day disability support. A support coordinator may help you compare and organise providers, while those providers deliver the funded supports you choose.

The three levels of support coordination

Support connection focuses on understanding the plan and building confidence connecting with services. Support coordination helps put supports in place and build skills to coordinate them. Specialist support coordination is a higher level for more complex support environments.

The level and amount of support coordination available depends on what is funded in the participant’s plan.

Support coordinator, plan manager and provider are different roles

A plan manager mainly helps with the financial administration of plan-managed funding. A support coordinator helps organise and build capacity around supports. A service provider delivers the actual supports or services agreed with the participant.

One person may work with all three roles, so it is important to understand who is responsible for what and where any conflicts of interest need to be managed.

Questions to ask a support coordinator

Ask how they will help you work towards your goals, how often they will contact you, how progress is recorded, how they compare providers, how they manage conflicts of interest, what happens in a crisis and how they will help you become more confident managing your own supports.

Check the service agreement, rates and the amount of support coordination funding available before deciding how often you want to use the service.
