Starting a new support arrangement

Starting With a New NDIS Provider

A practical checklist for starting with a new NDIS provider, including meetings, service agreements, funding, communication and support preferences.

The quick answer

Starting well means making the support arrangement clear before regular services begin. Discuss the supports required, schedule, prices, payment, communication, preferences, risks, cancellations and how changes will be handled.

Meet before regular supports begin

Current NDIS guidance recommends meeting with a new provider before starting. Use the meeting to explain goals, routines, communication needs, accessibility requirements and what a good support day looks like.

Agree on the service details

Confirm which supports will be provided, where and when they will happen, who may deliver them and how changes are requested. Ask what happens if a regular worker is unavailable.

Read the service agreement

A written service agreement can document supports, prices, payment arrangements, cancellation terms, responsibilities, complaints and how the agreement can be changed or ended. Read it before signing and ask for wording you understand.

Decide what information to share

You control what plan information and personal information you share. Provide the information the provider genuinely needs to deliver safe and appropriate support, and ask how that information will be used and protected.

Review the first few weeks

After services start, check whether the support matches what was agreed. Raise concerns early, document important changes and update the arrangement when needs, goals, rosters or the NDIS plan change.

Official NDIS information used for this guide

NDIS rules and terminology can change. These official pages are useful for checking the latest position.

Important: This AIC Services guide is general information, not an NDIS funding decision, clinical advice or legal advice. Participants should check their current plan and official NDIS information for their circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Should I meet a provider before starting?

Current NDIS guidance recommends meeting with a new provider before you start working with them.

Do I have to share my whole NDIS plan?

No. Participants have choice and control over the information and permissions they share with providers.

What if the support is different from what we agreed?

Raise the issue with the provider and refer to the service agreement. If the arrangement cannot be improved, participants can consider changing providers subject to the agreement and any notice requirements.
