NDIS Provider vs Support Coordinator
Understand the difference between an NDIS service provider and a support coordinator, including what each role does and how they may work together.
The quick answer
An NDIS provider delivers agreed supports or services. A support coordinator helps a participant understand and use their plan, connect with providers and build confidence managing supports. The roles can interact, but they are not the same.
What an NDIS provider does
A provider delivers NDIS supports that match the participant’s plan and agreed service arrangement. Depending on the provider, this can include supports such as in-home assistance, community participation, personal support, transport or supported living.
What a support coordinator does
A support coordinator helps a participant understand and use their plan, connect with NDIS providers and community or mainstream services, and build skills to coordinate supports. Support coordination must be funded in the participant’s plan for the participant to use that funded service.
How the roles can work together
A support coordinator may help a participant identify suitable providers and organise how different services fit together. The service provider then delivers the agreed support. Good communication can help keep goals, schedules and responsibilities clear.
Keep choice and conflicts clear
Participants remain in control of who they work with. When an organisation provides more than one type of service, it is important that choices, alternatives and any potential conflicts of interest are explained clearly.
