ILO vs In-Home Support: How Are They Different?
In-home support can be a flexible way to receive help with daily tasks in the home. ILO goes further by designing an ongoing living-support arrangement around where a person lives, who they live with and how support is shared and backed up.
In-home support can be targeted
A participant may use ordinary in-home support for specific tasks or times of day, such as personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, prompting or routines. The participant can remain in their existing living arrangement.
ILO is a designed living-support arrangement
ILO is intended for participants who want to deliberately design how they live and how support is provided around that living arrangement. It can involve a host, housemate or other tailored structure.
ILO includes a formal design process
The NDIS describes ILO as a staged process. The participant explores and designs the arrangement first, then the agreed supports are put in place after the service proposal is approved.
Support intensity alone does not decide it
The decision is not simply about how many support hours a person needs. The living arrangement, informal supports, relationships, safety, independence goals and how back-up support will work all matter.
Start with the participant’s preferred way to live
A useful first question is whether the participant mainly needs support in their current home or wants to design a different living arrangement with a host, housemate or structured support network.
