SIL Shared Support vs One-to-One Support
Understand shared and one-to-one Supported Independent Living support, how they can differ, and questions to ask about the roster and daily support arrangement.
The quick answer
SIL funding can involve sharing a support worker with other participants or receiving individual support. The mix depends on disability support needs, the living arrangement and what is funded in the participant’s plan.
What shared SIL support means
Shared support means a worker may assist more than one participant during the same period. The practical arrangement should still account for each person’s needs, routines, privacy and safety.
What one-to-one support means
One-to-one support means a worker is supporting one participant during the relevant period. Current NDIS guidance says one-to-one SIL may be funded in limited situations where disability support needs justify it.
A SIL roster can include both
A participant may have some periods of shared support and some periods of individual assistance. What matters is whether the overall arrangement can safely and appropriately meet the participant’s disability-related support needs.
Ask what happens at busy times
Meals, personal care, appointments, behaviours, medication and bedtime can create competing demands in a shared home. Ask how workers prioritise support when more than one person needs help.
Ask about overnight support
Clarify whether overnight support is active, inactive or another agreed arrangement, who the worker is supporting, and how unplanned needs are handled.
Review the arrangement when needs change
If disability support needs change, the support schedule and service arrangement may need review. Providers do not decide NDIS funding, but they can document service delivery and discuss what they can safely provide.

Frequently asked questions
Is all SIL support shared?
No. Current NDIS guidance says participants may share a support worker or have an individual worker depending on how much help they need.
Can one SIL arrangement use both shared and one-to-one support?
Yes, an arrangement may include different support patterns at different times, subject to the participant’s needs and funded supports.
Does a provider decide whether one-to-one SIL is funded?
No. NDIS funding decisions are made through the participant’s NDIS plan. A provider can discuss how it would deliver the funded support.
