Getting ready for work

Preparing for Work With NDIS Support

Preparing for work is often a series of small steps rather than one application or interview. NDIS employment support may help a participant build disability-related skills and confidence for work, while schools, training providers, employers and mainstream employment services continue to meet their own responsibilities.

Clarify what “ready for work” means for the individual

For one person it may mean learning to arrive on time and follow a routine. For another it may mean practising communication, trying work experience, learning public transport or understanding workplace expectations. The preparation plan should match the person’s goals and starting point.

Build routines that can transfer into a workplace

Morning routines, travel planning, fatigue management, communication, task sequencing and asking for help can all affect work participation. Practising these skills in everyday settings can make the transition into work more predictable.

Use work experience to learn, not just to fill time

Work experience is most useful when there is a clear purpose: testing an interest, learning a task, understanding an industry or identifying what support is needed. The participant should be able to reflect on what worked and what should change next time.

Plan for transport and access early

Getting to and from work can be a major practical barrier. It is worth checking public transport skills, disability-related transport needs, start and finish times, accessibility and what support is the responsibility of the participant, provider or employer.

Review progress against the employment goal

A preparation plan should show whether confidence, skills, independence or work exposure are increasing. If the activities are not moving the participant toward their employment goal, the support approach may need to change.

NDIS rules and terminology can change. These official pages are useful for checking the latest position.

Important: This AIC Services guide is general information, not an NDIS funding decision, clinical advice, employment advice, legal advice or a guarantee of service availability. Check the participant’s current plan and official NDIS information for their circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Can a young participant start preparing for work before leaving school?

Yes. Current NDIS guidance describes employment preparation for young participants, including work experience and building work-related skills where disability-related support is needed.

Can NDIS support help with travel skills for work?

It may support disability-related skill building such as learning to use public transport when this is connected to the participant’s employment goals and plan.

Should work preparation have measurable goals?

Yes. Clear goals make it easier to tell whether the support is building useful skills and moving the participant toward employment.
