Finding and Keeping a Job With NDIS Support
Employment support can be relevant at different stages: looking for a first job, changing roles, returning to work, learning a new workplace or maintaining employment. The support should respond to disability-related barriers and remain connected to the participant’s employment goals.
Finding the right job is about fit as well as availability
A suitable role should consider the participant’s interests, strengths, support needs, communication style, stamina, transport and workplace environment. A poor fit can create barriers that extra support alone will not solve.
Recruitment support should build participation
Support may help a participant prepare applications, understand recruitment steps, practise communication and identify reasonable ways to explain support needs. The participant should remain involved in decisions about what is shared and with whom.
Starting a job often needs a different support plan
The first weeks may involve learning tasks, understanding routines, meeting coworkers and building confidence. Support can be adjusted as the participant becomes familiar with the workplace and identifies what they can do independently.
Keeping a job can involve ongoing disability-related support
Some participants may need on-the-job coaching, mentoring, assistance with communication, personal care or other disability-related supports. The level of support should be reviewed rather than assumed to stay the same forever.
Changing jobs can also be a valid employment goal
Employment support is not only for first-time job seekers. A participant may want to move to a role that better matches their skills, conditions, hours or career goals.

Frequently asked questions
Can NDIS employment support help someone change jobs?
Current NDIS guidance includes support for finding or changing jobs when disability-related assistance is needed and the support meets the funding criteria.
Can support continue while someone is employed?
Yes. Disability-related support may continue in the workplace when it is funded and required, for example coaching, mentoring or personal care.
Who is responsible for ordinary workplace training?
Employers remain responsible for ordinary workplace responsibilities. NDIS funding is for disability-related support and should not replace what an employer or another system should provide.
