Transport needs are often connected with a participant’s everyday goals. NDIS transport arrangements may help eligible participants travel to work, study, day programs, community activities or other agreed destinations, but the type of funding and support can differ.
Travel connected with work and study
For some eligible participants, recurring transport may help with travel to and from work or study. The participant’s plan will show whether recurring transport is included and how it can be used.
A support worker may also provide practical disability support around a work or study journey when this forms part of the participant’s agreed support.
Travel connected with community life
Transport may also help a participant attend community activities, social groups, recreation, day programs or other activities that support participation and independence.
The journey and the support at the destination should be planned together when a worker is staying with the participant.
Appointments and other destinations
Support-worker transport can also be discussed for medical appointments and other practical destinations where the journey is part of the participant’s disability support. This does not mean every journey is automatically an NDIS-funded support.
The participant should check their current plan and funding, while the provider should confirm what service it can safely and practically deliver.
Planning the request
Provide the pickup location, destination, date and time, accessibility requirements, whether the worker will stay at the destination, and any support needed during the journey.
These details make it easier to distinguish a simple transport request from a broader community participation or daily support shift.
