NDIS Employment Support Explained
NDIS employment supports can help a participant build work skills, find suitable employment, settle into a workplace and maintain a job when disability-related support is needed. The right support depends on the participant’s goals, stage of employment and current plan.
Employment support can start before a job is found
Support can focus on identifying strengths, trying work activities, understanding employer expectations, building communication and teamwork skills, learning workplace routines and developing confidence. For young participants, planning can also begin while still at school when disability-related help is needed beyond what the school or employer is responsible for.
Finding work is only one part of the employment journey
A participant may need support to explore suitable roles, connect with employers, prepare for recruitment, change jobs or progress their career. Employment goals should be specific enough to guide the support but flexible enough to change as the participant gains experience.
Support can continue in the workplace
NDIS employment support can include disability-related assistance at work, such as coaching, training, mentoring or personal care, when it meets the participant’s needs and funding. The aim is usually to build capability and help the participant take part in work as independently as possible.
NDIS employment support is not the same as every employment service
Mainstream employment programs, employers, schools, TAFE and universities also have responsibilities. NDIS funding is intended for disability-related supports and should not duplicate supports another system is responsible for providing.
Start with the employment goal and the support barrier
A practical conversation begins with what the participant wants to achieve, what is currently getting in the way and what support would make the next step possible. This helps separate a useful employment support from a generic activity that is not connected to a work outcome.

Frequently asked questions
Can the NDIS help someone get ready for work?
It may fund disability-related supports that build skills, confidence and independence for work when the funding criteria are met.
Can employment support continue after someone gets a job?
Yes. Some participants need disability-related support at work, including coaching, mentoring, training or personal care, depending on their plan and needs.
Does employment support guarantee a job?
No. Employment support can help build skills and pursue employment goals, but it cannot guarantee a particular job or employment outcome.
