How Transport and Community Support Work Together
Understand how transport and community participation support can work together when an NDIS participant needs help with both the journey and the activity at the destination.
The quick answer
For many participants, getting to an activity and taking part in it are connected. Transport may solve the journey, while community support provides the practical assistance the participant needs before, during or after the activity.
The journey is one part of the support
Transport can help the participant reach an appointment, social activity, community group, workplace, study location or another agreed destination.
If the worker is also staying with the participant, the service includes more than the journey. The participant may need support with mobility, communication, navigation, personal care, confidence or participation at the destination.
Plan the whole shift
Discuss pickup time, travel time, accessibility, how long the activity will last, the support required while there and the return journey. This helps avoid gaps between transport planning and support planning.
It also helps the provider understand staffing and timing before confirming the service.
Separate funding concepts when needed
Recurring transport funding, support-worker transport, participant transport and provider travel are different concepts. The participant’s plan and service agreement should be used to understand which arrangement applies.
AIC Services does not determine NDIS funding eligibility but can explain the service it proposes to deliver.
Keep the participant’s goal central
The point of transport and community support is not simply to complete a trip. It is to help the participant pursue their own goals and take part in activities that matter to them.
Good planning should preserve choice and independence while making sure practical support is available when needed.
