Morning Routine Support With an NDIS Support Worker
Morning support can be organised around the participant’s own routine, preferences and goals rather than forcing everyone into the same timetable.
What morning support may involve
Depending on the participant’s needs, a support worker may help with getting ready for the day, personal care, dressing, breakfast, basic household tasks, preparing items for work or appointments and getting organised to leave home.
Some people need hands-on assistance. Others mainly need reminders, supervision, set-up help or extra time to complete tasks independently.
Build the routine around the person
A useful routine records preferred times, communication needs, privacy preferences, mobility or equipment requirements, food preferences and the order in which the participant likes tasks completed.
Consistency matters, but a routine should still allow reasonable flexibility when the participant’s plans, energy or support needs change.
Use support to strengthen independence
Where appropriate, the worker can complete tasks with the participant rather than automatically doing everything for them. Repetition, clear steps and allowing enough time can help the participant build confidence and daily living skills.

Frequently asked questions
Can a support worker help with showering and dressing in the morning?
Personal care may be part of support work when it is needed and included in the participant’s support arrangements. Dignity, consent, privacy and safe work practices remain important.
Can morning support include breakfast preparation?
It may include preparing or cooking meals where this is part of the participant’s everyday support needs and funded supports.
Does a morning routine have to be the same every day?
No. A consistent framework can be useful, but support should respond to the participant’s choices, appointments, goals and changing needs.
