Choosing the Right Level of In-Home Support
The right level of in-home support is not simply “more” or “less”. It is the amount and type of assistance that helps the participant manage everyday life safely while preserving choice and independence.
Think about frequency, duration and intensity
Frequency is how often support is needed. Duration is how long each visit needs to be. Intensity is how much assistance the participant requires during the task, ranging from reminders or supervision to direct hands-on help.
A participant may need frequent short visits, fewer longer shifts or a combination depending on their routines and goals.
Match support to the task
Personal care, meal preparation, household tasks and preparing for community activities may each require different levels of help. Planning task by task produces a more useful picture than applying one support level to the whole day.
Support should also account for safe work requirements, equipment, communication needs and any documented risk controls.
Review when circumstances change
Support needs can change because of a new home, work or study schedule, health changes, equipment, skill development or different goals. When the current routine no longer fits, discuss the change with the provider and relevant NDIS contacts as needed.
A provider can explain service options and availability, but only the NDIS can make decisions about what funding is included in a participant’s plan.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether I need prompting or hands-on help?
Look at each task separately and identify what the participant can safely do alone, what needs reminders or supervision and what requires direct physical assistance.
Can support levels be different on different days?
Yes. Different routines and activities can create different support needs across the week.
Can a provider decide to increase my NDIS funding?
No. Providers can discuss support needs and service options, but NDIS funding decisions are made through the NDIS planning and review processes.
