When Medium Term Accommodation May Be Suitable
Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is a temporary NDIS home-and-living support for specific transition situations. It is not general emergency housing or a short holiday stay.
MTA is for a transition gap
Current NDIS guidance describes MTA as accommodation funding for up to 3 months, or 90 days, when a participant needs somewhere temporary while a longer-term home or home-and-living arrangement is not ready. It is generally a one-off support rather than an ongoing accommodation model.
Situations where MTA may be relevant
Examples include waiting for approved Specialist Disability Accommodation to become available, being unable to use a home while disability-related home modifications are completed, or leaving hospital when home-and-living supports are being arranged. The NDIA decides whether MTA meets the funding criteria for the participant.
MTA is not emergency housing
MTA is not designed to replace crisis or homelessness services. If the main issue is an immediate housing crisis rather than an NDIS disability-related transition need, mainstream or state housing and emergency services may also need to be involved.
Separate accommodation from daily support
MTA funding covers the temporary accommodation itself. Food, internet, electricity and personal care are not included in the MTA accommodation payment. Approved disability supports can continue to be used separately where they are included in the participant’s plan.
Questions to clarify before arranging MTA
Confirm the reason for the temporary stay, expected transition pathway, disability-related accessibility needs, daily support requirements, who is coordinating the move, and what needs to happen before the participant can move to their longer-term home.

Frequently asked questions
How long can MTA be funded?
Current NDIS information describes MTA as accommodation for up to 3 months, or 90 days, in specific circumstances. Limited extensions may be considered by the NDIA in some situations.
Is MTA the same as STA?
No. STA is a short-term support used for temporary breaks and support arrangements. MTA is transitional accommodation while a longer-term home or approved arrangement is not ready.
Can AIC Services decide whether I am eligible for MTA?
No. AIC Services can discuss service suitability and practical arrangements, but the NDIA decides whether MTA is included in a participant’s plan.
