Waiting for Home Modifications and MTA
Sometimes a participant has a long-term home but cannot safely use it while important disability-related modifications are being completed. MTA may be one temporary option where the NDIS funding criteria are met.
Why a temporary move may be needed
Major bathroom, access or other complex modifications can make a home temporarily unusable. The key question is whether the participant needs alternative accommodation because of their disability-related access needs while the approved work is completed.
MTA is still temporary
MTA is intended to bridge a defined transition gap. Planning should include the expected modification timeline, what must be completed before return, and who will confirm that the home is ready.
Check the temporary property carefully
The temporary accommodation should be checked for accessibility, transfers, bathroom use, equipment, entrances, transport and any other features that are essential to the participant’s daily support.
Daily supports continue separately
The accommodation payment does not include personal care or ordinary living expenses. Support-worker arrangements, meals and other needs should be planned separately.
Prepare the return home
Before returning, confirm equipment placement, worker access, medication storage, emergency plans and any changed routines. A short handover can prevent avoidable disruption after the modifications are finished.
