Changing Support Workers Without Changing Provider
Practical steps for asking an NDIS provider to change a support worker while keeping the same provider and service arrangement where possible.
The quick answer
You may be able to ask your existing provider for a different worker without changing providers. Start by explaining what is not working, what you need from a worker match and whether any immediate safety or boundary concerns need attention.
Explain the issue clearly
Describe the practical problem rather than only saying the match is not working. Examples might include communication, reliability, boundaries, skills, personal-care preferences, availability or difficulty following agreed routines.
Ask about another worker
Tell the provider the qualities or competencies that are important in the replacement worker. Ask whether you can meet or speak with the worker before regular shifts begin where practical.
Protect continuity of support
If ongoing support is important, discuss how shifts will be covered while the provider arranges a different worker. Confirm any temporary changes to times, routines or responsibilities.
Escalate concerns when necessary
If feedback does not resolve the issue, use the provider’s complaints process or seek help from a trusted person, support coordinator or plan manager where appropriate. Participants can also change providers if the broader service relationship is not working.
Document important changes
Update relevant preferences, rosters or service information so the new worker understands the agreed support. Sensitive information should only be shared where necessary and with appropriate consent.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to change providers if I want a different worker?
Not necessarily. You can first ask your existing provider whether another suitable worker is available.
What should I tell the provider?
Explain what is not working and the worker qualities, skills, communication style or availability that would better suit the participant.
What if the provider cannot resolve the problem?
Use the provider’s feedback or complaints process and consider other support options. Participants can change providers if needed, subject to service-agreement notice requirements and continuity planning.
