Can You Choose Your NDIS Support Worker?
Learn about participant choice when selecting NDIS support workers, what to discuss with a provider and what may affect worker availability and matching.
The quick answer
Participants have choice and control over who they work with. In practice, worker matching also depends on availability, the supports required, skills, location, timing and the provider’s workforce arrangements.
Think about what matters in a worker match
Consider communication style, reliability, experience, interests, cultural preferences, personal-care requirements, transport needs and whether the worker understands important routines and boundaries.
Ask the provider how matching works
If you use an organisation, ask how workers are selected, whether you can meet workers first, how preferences are recorded and what happens when a preferred worker is unavailable.
Check screening and suitability
Current NDIS guidance recommends making sure support workers have completed an NDIS Worker Screening Check. Some roles may also require additional qualifications, checks or competencies.
Give feedback about the match
A worker match may look suitable on paper but not work well in practice. Tell the provider what is and is not working and ask for changes when needed.
