Short-Term Accommodation (STA) Planning Checklist
A practical checklist for planning NDIS Short-Term Accommodation, including dates, support needs, overnight care, medication, routines, accommodation and funding.
The quick answer
A short-term accommodation enquiry is easier to assess when the participant’s support needs and preferred dates are clear. Use this checklist to prepare the information a provider may need before confirming whether a stay is suitable and available.
Confirm the purpose of the stay
Current NDIS guidance describes short-term accommodation as support that gives a participant time apart from usual care arrangements while primary informal supports can take a short break. Check how the support fits the participant’s plan and circumstances.
Write down the dates and location
Provide preferred dates, flexibility, the participant’s home state or territory and whether the support is being considered at home, in a shared setting or in individual accommodation.
Describe everyday support needs
List personal care, showering, toileting, meals, mobility, communication, behaviour support, medication, community access and any equipment or environmental requirements.
Explain overnight needs
If the participant usually needs overnight support, describe what that looks like and how often assistance is expected. Current NDIS guidance allows short-term accommodation funding to support a stay in the participant’s own home or a homestay arrangement with a support worker when overnight support is usually needed.
Share routines and preferences
Include sleep routines, food preferences, communication methods, sensory needs, cultural preferences, important activities and what helps the participant feel comfortable and safe.
Confirm funding and what is not included
Check the participant’s plan and current NDIS rules. Short-term accommodation does not cover ordinary holiday costs, airfares, events or food and meals listed as non-NDIS supports.

Frequently asked questions
Can STA be used in my own home?
Yes. Current NDIS guidance says short-term accommodation can be used in the participant’s own home, a shared setting or individual accommodation, subject to the participant’s plan and support needs.
Does STA include ordinary holiday costs?
No. Current NDIS guidance lists holiday packages, airfares, events, food and other ordinary travel or holiday costs as items STA funding cannot pay for.
Does an enquiry guarantee a booking?
No. A provider still needs to consider dates, staffing, accommodation, support needs, safety and suitability before confirming a stay.
If the break will happen at home
An in-home arrangement needs its own preparation, including routines, communication preferences, personal care needs and a clear handover from usual supports.
