Questions to Ask Before Arranging Respite Support
Before agreeing to a respite arrangement, clarify exactly what support will be provided, who will provide it, where it will happen and how the participant’s usual routines and preferences will be protected.
Ask about the support itself
What tasks are included? Is personal care required? Will the worker prepare meals, support medication routines within their role, provide transport or support community activities? Which tasks are not included in the service arrangement?
Ask about workers and continuity
How are workers matched? Can the participant meet a worker first? What happens if the regular worker is unavailable? What training or competencies are needed for the participant’s specific supports?
Ask about cost, funding and changes
How will the service be charged? What happens if the booking changes or is cancelled? Is the support consistent with the participant’s current plan? A provider can explain its service and pricing, but funding eligibility remains an NDIS decision.

Frequently asked questions
Should I ask for a service agreement?
Yes. A service agreement can make the agreed supports, responsibilities, prices, cancellation arrangements and other practical details clearer.
Can I ask who the support worker will be?
Yes. Participants have choice and control in how supports are delivered, and it is reasonable to discuss worker matching and introductions.
What if my support needs are complex?
Provide detailed information early so the provider can determine whether it has suitable staff, training and capacity before accepting the service.
