Respite Support for Family and Carers
Families and carers often provide significant unpaid disability-related support. Respite can create time apart from usual caring arrangements while the participant continues to receive the support they need.
The participant remains at the centre
Respite is not only about the carer having time away. It should also make sense for the participant. Discuss what they want to do, who they are comfortable with, how routines should be maintained and whether they prefer support at home or in another suitable setting.
A short break can be planned in different ways
Depending on the participant’s plan and needs, respite may involve additional support at home, community activities that create time apart, or short-term accommodation. Current NDIS guidance says short-term accommodation is intended to support time apart from usual caring arrangements and sustain those arrangements.
Plan for sustainability, not just emergencies
Regular planned breaks can be easier to organise than waiting until a caring arrangement is under extreme pressure. A written support routine, current contact details and an agreed service arrangement make future bookings easier to discuss.

Frequently asked questions
Is respite only for the carer?
No. The participant’s needs, preferences and goals remain central. The arrangement can also give the participant different experiences, activities or time with other trusted workers.
Can respite happen in the participant’s own home?
Yes. Current NDIS information recognises supports in the participant’s own home as one possible arrangement in relevant circumstances.
Does every NDIS plan include respite funding?
No. Funding depends on the participant’s plan and circumstances. Check the current plan and official NDIS information.
