Regular short breaks

Planning Regular Short Breaks at Home

Regular short breaks can be easier for participants and families when they are predictable. A simple plan for timing, worker consistency, routines and handover can make each respite shift more familiar.

Choose a rhythm that fits the participant

Start with the participant’s routine rather than an arbitrary calendar. Consider when usual carers most need a break, when the participant is comfortable with another worker and whether the support should include home activities, community access or both.

Consistency can reduce disruption

Where possible, using a smaller group of familiar workers can reduce repeated handovers and help staff learn communication preferences, routines and what works well. Worker availability can change, so keep written support information current as a backup.

Review the arrangement after a few shifts

Ask the participant what they liked, what felt unfamiliar and what they would change. Families and workers can also note whether the timing is sustainable, whether support tasks are realistic and whether the service agreement needs updating.

Official NDIS information used for this guide

NDIS rules and terminology can change. These official pages are useful for checking the latest position.

Important: This AIC Services guide is general information, not an NDIS funding decision, clinical advice, emergency advice or legal advice. Participants should check their current plan and official NDIS information for their circumstances. If there is an immediate risk to life or safety, contact the appropriate emergency service.

Frequently asked questions

How often should regular respite happen?

There is no single schedule that suits everyone. Frequency should reflect the participant’s needs, plan, preferences and the sustainability of usual caring arrangements.

Should the same support worker attend each time?

Consistency can be helpful, but it may not always be possible. A clear written routine and handover can help when another suitable worker is needed.

Can regular short breaks include community activities?

They may, where community participation is within the participant’s goals, plan and agreed support arrangement.
